Beschreibung des Antica Chardonnay
Climate Vintage: Flooding kicked off the New Year in Napa Valley but did little damage to the dormant vines, as cover crops stabilized soils in vineyards while seasonal amounts of rain continued into spring. Budbreak was delayed by a few weeks, but by June the weather had turned and vines began to bloom and set fruit. In mid-July, a record setting heat wave lasted about 10 days. With the crop a few weeks behind the historical typical cycle, the heat helped the vines catch up to being normal for a typical growing season. Sufficient levels of soil moisture from the heavy winter rains allowed the vines to survive the extreme heat. Seasonal and somewhat cooler weather returned in August. Cool weather dominated early October.
Vineyard: Chardonnay grapes were harvested from the Reserve single vineyard, 10 acres in size. The vineyard is planted at an elevation of 1420 feet, in the volcanic soil series Aiken Loam. The vineyard is planted at a vine density of 1815 vines per acre and divided equally between 5 distinct Chardonnay clones that contribute to the wine's complexity through the clonal diversity. Clones Dijon 96, Dijon 76, and Weimer Burgundian Selection provide for the complexity in flavors while clones Prosser 15 and Maritni 4 provide the natural acidity that brings balance and a minerality character to the wine. While Chardonnay grapes have been grown on the estate since 1982, the 2006 Chardonnay marks the first vintage for Antica Napa Valley.
